a new play by LINDA FAIGAO-HALL

coming April 2009 to the Lion

GOD, SEX AND BLUE WATER is the story of a mother and daughter who have lost their Philippine Island home and must emigrate to join family in Hoboken, New Jersey. This play asks how one person can preserve her cultural identity in the face of losing her home. As her mother prepares to take part in Pasyon, a Filipino Lenten ritual, Clarita falls in love with a wealthy American businessman, forcing her family to confront the disparity between their traditional beliefs and those of modern American society. This innovative and startlingly comic play challenges us to find new ways of looking at cultural diversity; bringing fresh insight into the ways we deal with love, immigration, and religious tension in the 21st century. Although it focuses on the Filipino-American experience, it succeeds in speaking to the universal in all of us: the search for love and meaning, for human connection in a world whose geographical and cultural borders are vanishing.

PRAISE FOR FAIGAO-HALL's WORK WITH LIVING IMAGE ARTS

“Sparrow stands out as a rollercoaster of emotions, strong writing and solid performances... fresh, rarely dramatised material, a strong cast and emotional turbulence... Faigao-Hall's writing is sharp, clever and intense, executed wonderfully!” - New Theater Corp

"(Audiences) will surely love the poignant play called Sparrow by Linda Faigao-Hall!" -Asian Journal

"Lor and Miclat are excellent in their roles, and the play is very touching. With a great sadness and a sense of hope, the story was well-executed all the way around." - Off-Off Broadway Review

“(Sparrow), could easily be extended into a full-length play... after 20 minutes, I cared enough to want more and was disappointed to see it end... Lor is an absolute delight... She is adorable, and her comic timing is dead-on... Miclat’s subtle and moving performance makes it clear that under this Sparrow’s exterior is a lot of love, longing, and pain.” - NY Theater
